Christmas is a wonderful time of year. It’s a time where we can give and say thanks. For many though it’s also the toughest time of year where financial pressures are increased as the demand for the next best thing or the latest fad hits our screens demanding our attention to buy.
Chuck Palahniuk summed up this culture in his book Fight Club and the attached image and quote says it all. My appeal is to start supporting the arts and creative industries, especially the independent movement of artists. We are the people that provide you with timeout from your daily struggles of the mind with fresh and original material via: books, music, drama, art and film.
I believe in the power and voice of independent projects, books being my passion. If we don’t buy from indie publishers and authors we WILL lose them and by the time the demise is announced it’s all too late. Not only does the publishing house crumble the infrastructure of talent that’s held it together dies with it. That means a loss of jobs and that’s not good.
As a writer I can’t live off my royalties. Most of the people I know who write are in the same boat. If we all set aside our daily latte to buy a book from an indie then we are saving jobs and keeping the vibe alive.
You can stick with the top six as much as you like but if you want powerful voices from working class backgrounds, then you MUST shop indie because that’s where it’s at.
So what are you waiting for? Get over to the following publishing houses and buy a book today, it really makes a difference and you’re worth it.
Fahrenheit Press
Orenda Books
